Hi there!

My name is Olena Borkowsky, MSN, RN, CBC, LCCE and I love being a pediatric nurse.

In May 2013, I had the pleasure to join the staff of Upper East Side Pediatrics as the registered nurse. Working in busy and bustling New York City is truly a treat. NYC is similar to the field of nursing, there is something new and exciting to experience every day.

With over ten years of experience with the pediatric population, I worked as an school nurse in Red Bank, New Jersey before starting at Upper East Side Pediatrics. Promoting health through education is a central tenet of my nursing philosophy, and this was the impetus to start offering Infant/Child CPR and First Aid classes to our patients' families.

Pediatric Peace of Mind was born out of a passion for teaching and patient advocacy. My academic background is in psychology and as an undergrad at Northeastern University I first became interested in interpersonal communication as an area of research. Since earning my MSN at Seton Hall University, clinical practice has helped refine this interest to focus on attachment and bonding. There is nothing better than working with new parents, caregivers and their new babies and children to see those connections begin to bloom and proliferate.

As lovely as living in the big city can be, life here can be rather hectic. I started practicing yoga in 2009 as a companion therapy during rehabilitation for knee surgery, and it has been a guiding force in my life ever since. In January 2014 I completed a 100 hour Prenatal Yoga Teacher Training and have been teaching yoga to expectant mothers in NYC privately. Continued practice has many health benefits for mom and baby during pregnancy and beyond. The gift of yoga and offering classes was a perfect fit for Pediatric Peace of Mind.

In May 2014, I completed my Infant Massage certification and the experience enhanced my nursing practice tremendously. Infant massage is a cross cultural tradition of therapeutic touch and communication. Mothers, fathers and caregivers alike learn a baby's cues and are able to address needs in a calm and trusting manner. Massage has been proven by myriad research studies to improve weight gain, neurological development and digestion. Babies experience a variety of behavioral and developmental improvements when they receive regular massage from their parents or caregivers.

In July 2015, I became certified as a breastfeeding counselor through Prepared Childbirth Educators (PCE), a nursing education business based in Pennsylvania. Lactation consultancy as a sub-specialty started gaining traction in the 1970s and is not a regulated term. The certified breastfeeding counselor (CBC) is an designation is reserved for registered nurses only and PCE is "dedicated to quality continuing education for nurses by meeting or exceeding the competencies and program guidelines for perinatal education determined by Association of Women's Health, Obstetric, Neonatal Nurses." Helping women, babies and families with breastfeeding has been one of the best and most fulfilling extensions of my nursing practice.

2016 was an exciting professional year as I became certified in Childbirth Education through Lamaze International. The mission of Lamaze is to advance safe and healthy pregnancy, birth and early pregnancy through evidence-based education and advocacy. The anticipatory guidance and researched education and advocacy of Lamaze was a perfect fit for my personal nursing philosophy. I'm so excited to teach this information as well as collaborate with colleagues in the birth world to bring empowerment and knowledge to expecting parents in New York City!

I became an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) in December 2017. Years of clinical practice, several hundred hours of continuing education and a love-hate relationship with taking high stake exams resulted in an long awaited professional accomplishment. Supporting the psychology and physiology of breastfeeding is my passion.
